Facebook Training 7,500 Content Reviewers to Act on Objectionable Posts 24×7

After facing ire over reports that its moderators protect far-right activists and under-age accounts, Facebook says it is constantly grooming over 7,500 content reviewers how to handle posts related to  hate speeches , terror and child sexual exploitation on its platform. The content reviewers are a mix of full-time employees, contractors and companies Facebook partners with — covering every time zone and over 50 languages across the world. “Content review at this size has never been done before. After all, there has never been a platform where so many people communicate in so many different languages across so many different countries and cultures. We recognise the enormity of this challenge and the responsibility we have to get it right,” Ellen Silver, Vice President of Operations at  Facebook , wrote in a blog post on Friday. “Language proficiency is key and it lets us review content around the clock. If something is reported in a language that we don’t support 24/7, we

Google Maps Go Finally Gets Navigation Features, But There’s A Catch

Google has been at the forefront of  lightweight apps and low-end phones with the Android Go  program. But even though the Go version of apps help you save space, they can sometimes lack features. One of the major apps that had this drawback was  Google Maps Go , but Google has fixed it to some extent today. Google Maps Go lacked navigation . You could search for places nearby or see the distance between your work and home locations, but you couldn’t navigate between the two. Google has quietly released a new companion app for Google Maps Go called ‘ Navigation for Google Maps Go ‘ to make it  simpler for Android Go users to get turn-by-turn directions. Previously, when you wanted to get ‘turn-by-turn directions by tapping on the ‘Navigate’ button at the bottom right, it transferred you to the official Google Maps app installed on your device. Google Maps Go couldn’t do the navigation for you and well, it still can’t but the app no longer relies on the official app (which is a

Rachit Agarwal - Jul 26, 2018 Xiaomi Mi Mix 3’s Bezel-less Design Seemingly Confirmed by MIUI 10

Released in 2016, the  original Mi Mix smartphone  from Xiaomi was the device that introduced the concept of a true bezel-less smartphone to the world. A couple years down the line, the company is all set to launch the latest iteration of the device with a screen-body ratio that rumors suggest will rival the  futuristic Vivo NEX  and  Oppo Find X  smartphones. While information about the upcoming device continues to remain scarce, a new image found within  MIUI 10  is making people wonder whether Xiaomi has (inadvertently?) leaked the design of its upcoming smartphone. The images seen below were reportedly part of the MIUI 10 Chinese ROM, but they have apparently been removed in the latest versions of the software. As can be seen from the images, they resemble the supposed  Mi Mix 3 live photos that were leaked late last month. While the Xiaomi images do not mention the name of the device, the company is yet to launch any handset that resembles the diagram even remotely, adding

Samsung Could Use Ultrasonic In-Display Fingerprint Scanner For Galaxy S10

Samsung does not like following the common trends in the industry, and when it does, it makes sure that the products shine above those from competitors. Now, the latest news from the industry suggests that the upcoming Galaxy S10 series of flagship smartphones from Samsung will  feature an in-display fingerprint solution  which will be unlike any competitor. Samsung, as per Taiwan’s  DIGITIMES , will use an  ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor  instead of the optical sensor used by Vivo on two its flagships –  Vivo X21  and  NEX , by Xiaomi on the  Mi 8 Explorer Edition , and Huawei on the Porsche Design Mate RS. Unlike capacitive and optical fingerprint scanners which use light to create a map of ridges on fingers,  ultrasonic sensors use sound to read fingerprints . While the technology has been known for over a couple of years, not many smartphone makers have used it. One exception is the under-glass fingerprint sensor on  Honor 10  from Huawei’s sub-brand. It is unclea

Trump Repeats False Claim Of Apple Building New Plants in US

The US President Donald Trump has once again incorrectly claimed that Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is planning to build new manufacturing plants in the country. During a speech at the White House on Friday that focused on the state of US economy, Trump said: “Apple alone is bringing in $230 billion and they’re building new plants, they’re building a magnificent campus, they’re gonna be spending their money very wisely, but they’re spending it in our country, not in some other country”. “That was made possible by the new tax cut and reform plan,” he added. In January 2017, Trump said he spoke to Apple CEO Tim Cook over phone and he promised to build “three big plants” in the US. But Cook never directly responded to that claim. Image courtesy: TIME What Apple actually announced in January was to contribute $350 billion to the US economy over the next five years that includes an estimated $55 billion investment in 2018. “The company plans to establish an Apple campus in

UIDAI Wants to Monitor Social Media to ‘Neutralize Negative Sentiments’ About Aadhaar

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) last week put out a  Request for Proposal  (RFP), calling media monitoring firms to track press coverage for  Aadhaar  and submit regular reports to the authority, ostensibly, to gauge public sentiment about the  controversial ID project  that is yet to be accorded constitutional validity by the Supreme Court. Alarmingly enough, it has now emerged that the agency wants to track not only media reports, but also posts on Facebook and Twitter to identify ‘detractors’ and ‘influencers’ and run campaigns to ‘neutralize’ the ‘negative sentiments’ about Aadhaar. As it turns out, just a day before the aforementioned RFP was posted online, UIDAI put out another  bid document , seeking to hire a social media agency that will monitor and influence conversations related to Aadhaar on popular social media platforms. While once again, the explanation for the move seems to be innocent enough on the face of it, coming close on the heels
