Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Officially Unveiled With Sliding Front Cameras, Future 5G Support

After its first appearance back in August 2018, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 3 has been announced in China. To carry forward the bezel-less design, which the lineup is known for,  the smartphone comes with a sliding module to accommodate the dual front cameras, thus avoiding the notch.

The sliding part helps eliminate the Mi Mix 3’s chin, bumping the screen-to-body ratio to 93.4 percent. The new flagship comes with a 6.39-inch display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, which makes the phone look really tall. This display has a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels.

Being a flagship, the Mi Mix 3 uses a Snapdragon 845 and offers 6 or 8 GB RAM. Xiaomi also announced a special ‘Forbiddden City’ edition of the Mix 3 with 10GB of RAM. In terms of storage, there are options between 128GB and 256GBhowever, the special edition Mix 3 will only be available with 256GB of storage.

For photography, the Mi Mix 3 gets dual cameras on both the front and the back. While there’s a pair of two 12MP sensors on the back with wide-angle and telephoto lenses respectively whereas there is a 24MP camera for selfies supported by a 2MP sensor for depth sensing. The front cameras are also useful for AI face unlocking but there’s no dedicated IR sensor. While we’re not entirely sure, the text in Chinese points out to a soft flashlight for selfies in low light.

For security, the Mi Mix 3 comes with a fingerprint sensor on the back and since there’s no dedicated sensor for facial unlocking, the movable back panel is not motorized. You have the liberty to slide it up and down manually

The Mi Mix 3 will be among the first phones to support 5G and this model will be available starting Q1 2019. We’re not sure if units sold before that will also get the support via update and will update you after Xiaomi announces more details about this feature.

The Mi Mix 3 starts at 3,299 yuan (~Rs 35,000) for the 6GB+128GB model while the 8GB+128GB and 8GB+256 variants will be priced at 3,599 yaun (~Rs 38,000) and 3,999 yuan (~Rs 42,000). Lastly, the Forbidden City edition will be priced at 4999 yuan (~Rs 53,000).
