Vivo APEX 2019’s full-screen fingerprint scanner shown off in new video

“The APEX 2019 is a flagship phone that has no ports or buttons and is made from a single slab of aluminium”

Vivo recently announced its latest concept phone, the APEX 2019, in China. Although the phone won’t be available for purchase anytime soon, a device based on this concept could be launched in the coming months. The APEX 2019 is the successor to last year’s Vivo APEX, which also brought a new design paradigm to the smartphone industry. The brand’s latest is all metal and glass without any cut-outs, ports and buttons. The entire front of the phone is a display, except for a very thin chin at the bottom.

The Vivo APEX 2019 has a full-screen in-display fingerprint scanner among other cool technologies. The entire front of the screen can be used to unlock the phone and that’s a first. We have seen phones which hid the biometric module under the half portion of the display, but this is the first time that an entire screen is used for this. The ability to unlock the phone by placing your finger anywhere on the screen is quite interesting and will ensure that the phone is unlocked easily.

However, during the launch event in China, Vivo didn’t talk much about the phone and its features. Details about the camera, for example, were not given. A lot of questions were left unanswered, such as how fast is the sensor and whether it’s accurate enough. Well, to showcase that, the company posted a video on Weibo. The video shows that the full-screen scanner works fast and is accurate.

Vivo will be displaying the APEX 2019 concept phone at MWC 2019, so we can have a complete look then. Considering the Vivo NEX (review) was based on the first APEX concept from the last year, the company will most likely be launching a phone based on the APEX 2019, sometime in the future. As far as specs are concerned, the APEX 2019 concept is equipped with the Snapdragon 855 chipset, 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. While we know that the phone sports a dual-camera setup on the back along an LED flash, but we aren’t sure if it has a front-facing camera. We’ll surely be able to confirm all this and more, as 91mobiles will on the show floor of Mobile World Congress, so stay tuned.
